WHAT: Coyote Dreams: A VERY Arizona Christmas Comes to Los Portales Mall
It was December of 2006 when 150 people were on their feet applauding at the finale of the
premiere performance of Darknight Productions' original production of Coyote Dreams:
A VERY Arizona Christmas, written by Alexx Stuart and directed by his wife and business
partner Diedre Kaye. This creative team never dreamed the show would turn into a new
holiday tradition. Now in the third year of performances throughout the Phoenix area,
the duo will bring it back to the north valley on Tuesday, December 9th, and Thursday,
December 11th, as a precursor to the Carefree Christmas Festival which opens December 12th.
Festival organizer Jo Gemmill of The English Rose Tea Room wanted something to encourage
people to visit the Los Portales Mall to see the decorated Christmas Trees that will be
on display and available for silent auction. She asked Kaye and Stuart if they could
create a performance space in the lower level of the mall. Kaye is used to directing
Stuart's shows in small spaces and decided if they could convert the 10' round fountain
into a stage, the space would be perfect. With guidance and loaned tools from their
friends Matt and Meribeth Reeves, Kaye and Stuart built a new platform stage and are
ready for the performances next week. In addition to their popular play about a
Minnesota couple who explores the Phoenix area and greater Arizona to decide if they
should make a permanent move to sunshine, Darknight Productions will provide additional
entertainment during the weekend with two of their popular contracted shows.
Jacob Spinney, a mental illusionist, will mystify the audience with magic of the mind
as he determines what they are thinking. The Swing Sisters, a talented group of
vocalists will sing favorite tunes from the 1940's and 50's and holiday harmonies
reminiscent of The Andrews Sisters and The McGuire Sisters.
